I went to my first Mums That Rave on my own a few years ago. I was knackered, nervous about flying solo and I almost didn't go, but since it was so close by in Queens Park, I dragged myself along. And thank goodness I did.

Mums That Rave is the award-winning brainchild of DJ Nikki Beatnik, a legend in her own lifetime. She's been behind the decks since her teens, bringing big tunes across 6 continents for the likes of Kelis, Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé, Glastonbury and more. Fed up of the machismo and disrespect that came with the very male dominated DJ industry, Nikki set up MTR in 2019 as a inclusive space for women to dress up, cut loose and experience the togetherness and safety of our own company. And I thank my lucky stars that she did, because it's become a non-negotiable in my calendar ever since.

There's something very specific about the company of other good vibes women. It seems to me that in these times of hate speech, heartbreaking and maddening world news and real-life brushes with the shadowy underbelly of the manosphere, the uplifting surroundings of a community of women can be a tonic like no other. It's the freedom to dance like nobody's watching, to wear your loudest, tightest, shortest, or baggiest, most chilled outfit without negative commentary, to shake what your mama gave you without fear of some uninvited sweaty dude getting all up in your business. I have left each MTR feeling lighter on my feet, more comfortable in my body and with the telltale face ache of endless smiling.

Tempted to come? Good. A few tips.

  1. Be comfortable. If you're used to spending hours dancing in heels, go for it, but your flats/trainers are very, very welcome too.

  2. Fuel your body. MTR is helpfully timed in the after lunch slot, since most MTR venues don't have meals available. You might be able to restock your energy with bar snacks, but if you're going to be having a cocktail or three, don't get caught out with an unlined belly!

  3. Bring a fan. It gets hot. It just does, no matter how good the aircon is and how well you hydrate. I don't really sit down for the duration so I may not be the best example, but I would melt without my fan and I always end up flapping it at some grateful fellow raver!

  4. Stop saving that outfit for a special occasion. This is that occasion. If you like it and you're comfortable, then yes, it does fit. No, it's not too short, too loud or too out there. Wear the damn thing.

With regular events now in both Birmingham and London, women up and down the country can spend a glorious few hours throwing down to old school and new school classics. Roll with a crew or come on your Jack Jones, mama or not, you'll be welcomed with open arms. See you on the dancefloor!
